Impact of Enhancing Functional English Skills of Engineering Students: A Special Study on the Finishing School Initiative taken by KCG, Gujarat.

Researchers have inquired the potency of Finishing School Programmes (HESME) in enhancing graduates employability. The Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia ( MOHE ) introduced this Initiative. Aim of finishing school programmes is to prepare final semester students ready for the industry with some knowledge of functional and soft skills. Researchers have used questionnaire, survey and interview method to collect data from companies, students and employers. This article mainly focuses on graduates' employability skills. Final data analysis shows some positive aspects of this finishing school programmes as well as some critical views which suggest that still this project need to explore as per employers and companies views.

Interviewer: Rajesh Bojan has conducted a good interview on 'Towards a better education' and the interviewee : Dr. Darsha Jani provided apt answers of all the questions with detailed explanation and with depth analysis of all the major aspects of the field of education. In the interview very important topics were discussed like curriculum, faculty development programmes, practical education, Finishing School Initiative by KCG etc. She provided fruitful suggestions to students like how life skills played a very vital role for a successful career.

Haliday's Functional Approach explained well in this article with some practical examples and discussed and analysed various concepts like ragister and grammar, concept of genre, building block, relationship between spoken and written language etc. This approach can be seen language as a communicative resource and it's goal is to create meaning.

This article focuses on functional ESP course design specially English for engineering/ manufacturing. Jessy Koshy, Fathima Samana, Rajesh Gopinath have studied the problems that came to light in teaching functional English as a subject in Engineering colleges. English is a global language and to survive in this era proficiency in English is necessary. Many case studies, survey revealed various possible factors of graduates' unemployment because of lack of knowledge and good command on English language. Therefore knowledge of functional English is very important for all Students here special focus on engineering Students to get appropriate jobs in the market. This research try to analysed and compared syllabus of functional English of engineering students. Through detailed analysis researchers find some major drawbacks like outdated syllabus, faculty issue, more focus on technical subjects etc means application value of this subject is very less. Many problems of students also discussed. At the end this Study suggested certain remedies to improve the efficacy of English subject at engineering level.

This training works as a bridge between after graduation and before placement. English language can be learn for different purposes. But to learn language for Specific purpose is necessary. Like learning EOP (English for Occupational purpose) for that ESP ( English for Specific Purpose) instructor should prepare proper learning materials and methods as it is discussed above in one of the articles. EOP instructors should put more focus on functional English skills to learn language and teach grammar with the help of functional Approach through various techniques which is beneficial to students to get command over communication skills, writing skills etc as discussed earlier in literature review. These abilities in English language will help graduates to get better job and the problem of graduates unemploybility can be solve easily. For the same purpose Government of many countries are running various initiatives and providing training as it is mentioned in above article that Government of Malaysia running finishing school programmes in higher education to enhance employability skills. In a same way in Gujarat KCG running initiative named finishing school for semester 5 & 6 students in Government colleges. This Initiative focuses more on functional English skills and soft skills which help to make graduates industry ready.
6. Now, write 'Introduction'. The thesis statement shall be 'last' in the Introduction and 'first' in the Conclusion.
Teaching and learning English for Specific purpose, specially for occupational purposes have some challenges. Because generally learners focus on general English which is not satisfy student's occupational need or Specific requirement of English. So, for Occupational purpose learners should have to learn functional English skills. It is directly connect with Communication skills and teach how to use language for Specific function. This learning will help them in their workplaces in a practical use.
